Balusters
Staircase baluster installation
Pattern layout, spacing math and clean shoe collars, handled by crews who do this weekly.
What's included
Scope of work
- Iron, wood and hollow metal baluster options
- Existing wood spindles removed without rail damage
- Drilled, epoxied and shoe-collared for zero rattle
- Spacing set to code, typically 4 inches clear
How the swap works
Old balusters are cut and removed from the handrail and treads, holes are cleaned and resized, then new balusters are set in two-part epoxy with shoes or collars top and bottom. The rail stays in place unless it is damaged.
Design choices
Plain bar, single or double knuckle, twist, basket and scroll patterns in satin black iron, plus square and turned wood profiles. Mixing plain and decorative on a repeat pattern is the most requested look.
One-day turnarounds
Most straight-run staircases with 30 to 45 balusters are completed in a single day, with curved or two-story open rails running slightly longer.
Questions
Common questions
How much is a baluster replacement?
Iron baluster conversions typically run $45 to $90 per baluster installed, including removal of the old spindles.
Do you have to replace the handrail too?
No. If the handrail and newels are sound they stay, which keeps the cost of the upgrade down.
